Short on time? A Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo is a brilliant way for certified divers to hit the headline sites: three dives at spots like Batu Bolong, Makassar Reef and Castle Rock, back on land by evening. It is pure diving, without the tourist extras.
A liveaboard gives you more of those same incredible sites, plus the remote north and south that day boats cannot reach, and the land excursions along the way. It costs more, but it is the way to truly do Komodo if you love being on the water.
See The Day Trip Let's ChatA tiny rock with a hole in the strait between Komodo and Tatawa, this pinnacle is one of the most jaw-dropping reefs in the park, packed wall to wall with healthy coral and fish. Strong currents mean diving the sheltered side, where reef sharks, turtles, trevally and big schools swarm the slope.
A long rubble reef better known as Manta Point, this is the park famous manta highway where reef mantas cruise the cleaning stations and feed year-round. An easy drift over the shallows also turns up turtles, rays and reef sharks.
A spectacular submerged pinnacle near Gili Lawa Laut, blanketed in colourful soft corals and gorgonians. Strong currents pull in the big stuff: grey reef and whitetip sharks, giant trevally, schooling snapper and the occasional dogtooth tuna.
A seamount near Gili Lawa Laut famous for adrenaline-fuelled big-fish action. A negative entry drops you into strong current where sharks, trevally, tuna and dense schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish put on a show in the blue.
A dramatic pinnacle with boulders, swim-throughs and overhangs draped in vivid soft coral. Strong, swirling currents bring in reef sharks, turtles and the occasional manta, making it a thrilling dive for confident divers.
A trio of less-dived seamounts rising from the deep in southern Komodo, rewarding those who make the trip. Currents draw in mantas, sharks and schooling pelagics, with rich coral and macro life covering the pinnacles.
A relaxed sloping reef near Gili Lawa, perfect when you want a calmer dive between the high-octane sites. Healthy hard coral hosts turtles, reef fish, nudibranchs and cuttlefish, with easy conditions for all levels.
Also called Shotgun, this exhilarating drift between Gili Lawa Darat and Gili Lawa Laut fires you over a shallow saddle as the current accelerates. Mantas, reef sharks and schooling trevally patrol the channel in one of Komodo most memorable rides.
In south Komodo, this is one of the park most reliable manta spots, where reef mantas line up at cleaning stations and feed in the nutrient-rich water. A rocky bay of bommies and channels also shelters reef fish and the occasional shark.
An easy, scenic drift over a sloping garden of orange soft corals on the island sheltered side. Expect turtles, sweetlips, schooling fusiliers and reef fish gliding past as the current gently carries you along.
A gentle sloping reef and sandy patch that doubles as a manta cleaning station, making it a favourite for relaxed manta encounters. The shallows are great for beginners, with turtles, rays and reef fish rounding out the dive.
Known as turtle city, this calm, sloping reef is perfect for beginners and check dives, with green turtles resting everywhere among hard coral. Look out for cuttlefish, nudibranchs and the occasional reef shark in the shallows.
A laid-back coral garden off the famous pink-sand beach, ideal for easy dives and macro hunting. Frogfish, nudibranchs, pipefish and ghost pipefish hide among the corals, with turtles and reef fish throughout.
A world-class critter dive in cooler southern waters, this seamount is carpeted in colourful crinoids, sponges and soft coral. Rare frogfish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs and Spanish dancers make it a macro and photography paradise.
An easy, healthy coral garden close to Labuan Bajo, perfect for training, warm-up and check dives. Gentle slopes host turtles, reef fish, nudibranchs and the occasional reef shark in the deeper water.
A fast, exhilarating drift through the channel between Komodo and Gili Lawa, for confident divers only. Strong currents pull you past schooling trevally, snappers, reef sharks and turtles in a thrilling, action-packed dive.

Komodo can be dived year-round, but conditions vary by season. The central and northern sites shine through the dry season, and our Capoeng trips run from May to November. Mantas can be seen all year. Chat to us and we will point you to the best window for what you want to see.
Different trips have different requirements but generally as long as you have your level 1 Open Water Diver certificate and have had a dive in the last 12 months then you’re good to go!
If it’s been a while, we can setup a refresher for you before the trip so that you are brushed up on your skills.
Nitrox is available on board where offered, and is a great choice for the longer multi-dive days. You can add it to your trip easily during the booking process as long as you have the proper certification. And if you don’t, you can do your course on the trip!
Choose Bajak for more dive days, more space and a sociable group. Choose Capoeng for a short, intimate and relaxed trip. Still unsure? Chat to our team and we will help you decide.
Komodo is famous for its currents, and they are exactly what pull in the mantas, sharks and big schools of fish. Plenty of sites are gentle and perfect for newer divers, while the more demanding drift sites are saved for experienced divers. Our guides read the tides every single day and match each group to sites that suit their level, so there is brilliant diving here whatever your experience.
Komodo sits in the heart of the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Expect manta rays, reef sharks, turtles, huge schools of fish and vibrant coral reefs, with the chance of eagle rays and napoleon wrasse. On the right sites you will also find amazing macro life such as nudibranchs, frogfish and pygmy seahorses.
Every trip includes the classics: the famous Padar Island viewpoint hike for that postcard panorama, and a guided walk to see the legendary Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Depending on the itinerary you may also stop at pink beaches, snorkel spots and quiet islands along the way.
All our Komodo liveaboards depart from Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores. Labuan Bajo has its own airport (LBJ) with regular flights from Bali (Denpasar) and Jakarta.
Once you are booked in you will receive a confirmation page from our team with all the instructions for your particular trip.
Cabins vary from boat to boat, ranging from cosy shared rooms to private en-suite cabins. You will find the exact layout and cabin options on each boat’s trip page, and we are always happy to help you pick the right cabin for your trip and budget.
The waters around the central park, where most of the diving happens, are generally calm and sheltered, so seasickness is rarely an issue. If you know you are prone to it, bring your usual remedy along just in case and you will be absolutely fine.
Not on the Komodo trip as the boats are stopping at sites which are primarily for divers so they are quite a bit deeper and surface currents can be quite dangerous.
Water in the central and northern sites usually sits around 26 to 29°C, while the southern sites have cooler thermoclines that can drop towards 20°C. A 3mm wetsuit is comfortable for most of the diving, with a 5mm a good idea if you plan to dive the cooler south.
Komodo liveaboards are popular and the best boats and dates fill up months ahead, especially in peak season. We recommend booking as early as you can to lock in your spot, but it is always worth a chat with us about last minute availability too.
Komodo National Park put tight restrictions on daily visitors allowed so sometimes just because a trip you see has space, doesn’t mean there are passes available.
Believe me, I also hate commitment but the planning is worth it!
We strongly recommend both. Travel insurance covers the usual trip mishaps, and dedicated dive insurance (such as DAN) is inexpensive and well worth having for peace of mind. Dive insurance is not included in the trip price, so you can arrange your own or reach out if you want temporary insurance.
