Komodo Day Trip vs Liveaboard

Short on time? A Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo is a brilliant way for certified divers to hit the headline sites: three dives at spots like Batu Bolong, Makassar Reef and Castle Rock, back on land by evening. It is pure diving, without the tourist extras.

A liveaboard gives you more of those same incredible sites, plus the remote north and south that day boats cannot reach, and the land excursions along the way. It costs more, but it is the way to truly do Komodo if you love being on the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Komodo can be dived year-round, but conditions vary by season. The central and northern sites shine through the dry season, and our Capoeng trips run from May to November. Mantas can be seen all year. Chat to us and we will point you to the best window for what you want to see.

Different trips have different requirements but generally as long as you have your level 1 Open Water Diver certificate and have had a dive in the last 12 months then you’re good to go!

If it’s been a while, we can setup a refresher for you before the trip so that you are brushed up on your skills.

Nitrox is available on board where offered, and is a great choice for the longer multi-dive days. You can add it to your trip easily during the booking process as long as you have the proper certification. And if you don’t, you can do your course on the trip!

Choose Bajak for more dive days, more space and a sociable group. Choose Capoeng for a short, intimate and relaxed trip. Still unsure? Chat to our team and we will help you decide.

Komodo is famous for its currents, and they are exactly what pull in the mantas, sharks and big schools of fish. Plenty of sites are gentle and perfect for newer divers, while the more demanding drift sites are saved for experienced divers. Our guides read the tides every single day and match each group to sites that suit their level, so there is brilliant diving here whatever your experience.

Komodo sits in the heart of the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Expect manta rays, reef sharks, turtles, huge schools of fish and vibrant coral reefs, with the chance of eagle rays and napoleon wrasse. On the right sites you will also find amazing macro life such as nudibranchs, frogfish and pygmy seahorses.

Every trip includes the classics: the famous Padar Island viewpoint hike for that postcard panorama, and a guided walk to see the legendary Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Depending on the itinerary you may also stop at pink beaches, snorkel spots and quiet islands along the way.

All our Komodo liveaboards depart from Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores. Labuan Bajo has its own airport (LBJ) with regular flights from Bali (Denpasar) and Jakarta.

Once you are booked in you will receive a confirmation page from our team with all the instructions for your particular trip.

Cabins vary from boat to boat, ranging from cosy shared rooms to private en-suite cabins. You will find the exact layout and cabin options on each boat’s trip page, and we are always happy to help you pick the right cabin for your trip and budget.

The waters around the central park, where most of the diving happens, are generally calm and sheltered, so seasickness is rarely an issue. If you know you are prone to it, bring your usual remedy along just in case and you will be absolutely fine.

Not on the Komodo trip as the boats are stopping at sites which are primarily for divers so they are quite a bit deeper and surface currents can be quite dangerous.

Water in the central and northern sites usually sits around 26 to 29°C, while the southern sites have cooler thermoclines that can drop towards 20°C. A 3mm wetsuit is comfortable for most of the diving, with a 5mm a good idea if you plan to dive the cooler south.

Komodo liveaboards are popular and the best boats and dates fill up months ahead, especially in peak season. We recommend booking as early as you can to lock in your spot, but it is always worth a chat with us about last minute availability too.

Komodo National Park put tight restrictions on daily visitors allowed so sometimes just because a trip you see has space, doesn’t mean there are passes available.

Believe me, I also hate commitment but the planning is worth it!

We strongly recommend both. Travel insurance covers the usual trip mishaps, and dedicated dive insurance (such as DAN) is inexpensive and well worth having for peace of mind. Dive insurance is not included in the trip price, so you can arrange your own or reach out if you want temporary insurance.

Myself and my girlfriend had a brilliant few days here. The drift dives are fast and you really do need to respect the water, but Made talked us through every site before we jumped. Mantas at Manta Point were the moment that sold the whole trip for us.

Komodo was the diving leg of a longer Indo trip and it delivered. Strong drifts so respect the briefing, but once you hook in you just enjoy it. Mantas at Manta Point were the moment that stuck with me, plus turtles on the reef.

The diving was excellent, fast drift through the channel and a turtle on the way out. Only thing, the boat ride from Labuan Bajo is long and we were a bit packed in, so bring water and something for the sun.

Very good value and the booking was so easy, the team replied fast on WhatsApp and cleared all my doubts about the strong currents before I confirmed. The dives were superb, mantas at the point and turtles on the reef.
